Do You Really Need A Climate-controlled Storage Unit?

Posted on

Climate-controlled storage units are becoming more and more popular, and for good reason. The ability to control the temperature and humidity levels in a storage unit prevent items from damaging due to extreme freezing or hot temperatures outside. However, not everyone needs a climate-controlled storage unit.

There are some things to consider to help weigh your options when it comes to renting a place to store your items:

  • Climate Control Prevents Damage: There are many items that can become damaged quickly, such ass wood and leather in extreme temperatures. If you plan on storing items such as this, or pictures,  documents, metal, books, mattresses, or bedding, then yes, a temperature controlled unit is best for you. However, if you only plan on storing these items for a short amount of time, then you may be okay with just a regular unit, which is helpful if you want to save a bit of money on storage costs.
  • Climate Control is More Expensive: Yes, having a climate controlled storage unit is a bit more pricy than a regular storage unit. However, the extra cost is definitely worth it if you will be storing irreplaceable items with historical significance or something that has been passed down in your family. Also, the costs may be worth it versus having to replace the expensive leather couch you are storing, for example. However, for inexpensive items that can be replaced easily, you may be more willing to take the risk with a regular storage unit to save some extra money.
  • Keep Weather Conditions in Mind: If you are only planning on storing your items for a short period of time (less than a year), then you will want to keep in mind what the weather will be like in your area during that time. If you live in the desert, for example, and will be storing the items during the summer time, then climate control is probably best. However, if you are storing items during the spring time, then you may be okay without climate control.
  • Ask for Advice from Storage Unit Facility: Before signing up for a rental unit from your storage facility, consider asking what their opinion is on renting a regular unit versus a climate controlled unit. Provide them with details on the type of items you will be storing and for how long. Based on their experience with other customers, they may be able to provide you with the information that you need to decide whether or not you need a climate controlled unit.

By making an informed decision on what type of storage unit that you need, you can be sure that you choose one that you are most satisfied with that will keep your items in the condition that you expect and need.
